Faculty Senate

Task Force to Review P&T Procedures

Charge of the Task Force to Review P&T Procedures: The Faculty Senate Task Force to Review Iowa State University Promotion and Tenure (P&T) Procedures will work to determine the underlying fundamental principles of P&T which allow for faculty to fairly judge, and be judged by, their peers. These principles (e.g. careful and complete departmental peer review, fair unbiased peer vote, external peer review by experts in the field) will then be examined; The specifics of process(es) to use to ensure that the principles of promotion and tenure are applied will then be evaluated. The TF will solicit input from faculty work groups representing a broad range of disciplines and ranks. The final result of the work of the TF will be to draft a best practices document for use by departments and colleges. This document, which will outline guidelines that are permissive rather than restrictive, will help to ensure fairness in the P&T process.

The work of this task force is very important to Iowa State University and its future. The TF will report to the FS president by the end of the fall semester of 2005 as to progress that has been made. A report to the Executive Board of the FS is expected in March of 2006.
